I forgot to post here about this until now. Friday, I rode my bicycle
74 miles. It was a great ride, though exhausting. This is by far the
longest ride yet this season for me, but I still have a ways to go
before I'm ready for the Bike MS event, which is about that length
each of Saturday and Sunday, and includes more vertical change. This
year's Bike MS event will be just past my 5 year anniversary of
diagnosis for stage 3 colon cancer, so I'm pretty psyched about doing
this well. My peripheral neuropathy is still evident to some extent,
but nowhere near what it was at the worst point. It probably won't
get any better, according to what my onc has told me, but that's OK.
If only I'd gone with "alternative" medicine instead of "cut and
poison", I probably wouldn't have *any* PN or other side effects at
this point. Also, my widow would have a bunch of money from life
insurance, if it wasn't all sucked away by the snake oil salesmen.

Yow!
If you would not have had any side effects, you would not have anything
to remind you of how valuable your survival is and how much you had to go
through to get where you are today. My small pains are what push me to go
the "extra mile" when facing my battles. :-)

Good luck this summer!

I think I'd be happier to have *no* side effects, and let my usual non-
parity memory do its magic so I forget the whole thing! Small pains
are OK though; I don't mind muscle aches from overwork, sore spots
from scrapes, etc.
Good luck to you, too. How have you been doing?

I did another ride yesterday. This one wasn't as long (just under 30
miles) but was more vertical. I rode up Lookout Mountain, and over to
Genessee, for a total of about 3000' of ascent. I hope to be ready
for the Bike MS event at the end of the month. With grades mostly in
the 4 to 6% range, and a few sections at 10%, I didn't have any
trouble keeping going. This is such a change from the last part of
chemo, when I barely had the energy to walk a few hundred feet, and
couldn't bike at all.
Good health to all, and I hope this inspires some to keep as fit as
possible during your treatment.

Thanks! I'll be sure to post after Bike MS, whether I make it all the
way again, or have to shamefully ride the SAG wagon. It was pretty
close last year, so I don't know. I took a long ride today, but it
was on a motorcycle, so not really a good indicator of physical
condition.
BTW, my onc said my positive attitude was a large part of how I
handled the chemo so much better than expected. A good friend had a
recurrence of breast cancer, and was told she'd have about six
months. She had an attitude that made me look grumpy, and managed
over five years of high-quality life. I think her experience helped
me take a better approach when I was diagnosed. I really hope my
experience helps others here be more positive, and that it helps them
survive better, and longer.
