FYI, I just tried looking for this group in my newsreader, but my
server (eternal-september.org) doesn't show any groups with "merkel"
in the name. I then tried the google groups URL, and it looks like
that's valid. It brings up a page with the option to apply for
membership. So it looks like a closed, moderated group. As a patient,
you shouldn't have any trouble becoming a member of the group. I'd
suggest spending time in this alt.support.cancer, but this group has
been essentially silent for a long time now, with the exception of
some posts from the loon ironjustice and some spam. Good luck with
your treatment. I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, with about
a 65% chance of even surviving five years, I don't know what chance for
getting that far with no more cancer. Here I am, over ten years later,
with no sign of cancer and only a few annoying leftovers from chemo. I
know a cancer diagnosis can be devastating, but there is hope.

My husband Dick (age 72) has recently been diagnosed with merkel cell and original tumor on right temple was removed May 25. Two lymph nodes were positive so they are going to do follow-up surgery plus radiation. He is in very good health otherwise. Staged at IIIA for now.

The good news is that you don't need to do anything to join the group.
You've found it, and can contribute any time you like, using the same
method as you posted the above message. Welcome to the group, for
whatever that's worth. Now for the bad news. This group has been
pretty silent for a long time now. The message you replied to is well
over a year old, and there haven't been many since. Oddly enough, I was
also staged at IIIA, though for colon cancer, in 2006. I went through
surgery and six months of chemo (FOLFOX6 w/Avastin), and all of my scans
were clear, so they cut me loose in 2011. I hope your husband does as
well. I believe it's harder on the family than on the patient, so be
prepared for a hard time. I wish I could tell you where to find more
active support groups. This one was really active when I was diagnosed,
and it helped me a good bit to talk to others, patients and loved ones,
about what we go through. I watch this group, and will do my best to
respond to any questions, rants, or whatever else you choose to post
here, but I may be the only one. Please tell your husband he is also
welcome here, but not to expect much. About the only regular poster
I've seen here in a long time is an insane person who believes iron is
the key to all cancer.

If you'd bothered to simply read the previous comments on this very
thread, you'd know that you don't need to do anything to join. The
group is here, and you can post your own topic whenever you want. There
is no "moderation" to go through, etc.

Also note that this group is not specific to Merkel Cell Cancer, but is
instead a general cancer support group.

Unfortunately, there are also very few people reading the group anymore.
One thing you can do is create a new post, and introduce yourself. I
advise not giving full name or other truly identifying information, as
this is fully public. I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in June
of 2006, went through surgery and 6 months of chemo, and have been
healthy since, aside from some leftover side effects of the chemo.
